10 habits to improve and prevent cataracts

Do you have cataracts? Would you like to prevent them? It is true that today you can do surgery. The surgeons place another lens in the part where the cataract is. But, there are people who prefer to avoid operations and medicines as much as possible. Always it is a good option to try to fix the situation naturally.

In this post, we will see what we can do to help improve, prevent and solve this pathology.

What is a cataract?

Cataracts are cloud-like spots on the lens and are due to a change in its structure. It is said to be an accumulation of proteins in the lens, which avoids the passage of light.

Today, it is very common, especially in older people. In fact, in many countries where operations are not so widespread, it is the major cause of blindness. In Western countries, it is a very common and routine operation.

Now, I share with you ten tips to improve your cataracts or to prevent their appearance. Remember that this information does not replace any healthcare professional or optometrist advice.

1. Avoid alcohol, cigarettes and stimulants

We all know that these substances are harmful to our body. Specifically, they accelerate the process of cellular aging (among many other effects). In fact, this recommendation should be extended to the entire population, not just people with cataract or ocular problems.

2. Change your diet

Eat mostly vegetarian, with lots of  green leafy vegetables and cooked vegetables.. Our main source of nutrition comes from these foods.

Avoid or reduce the consumption of processed foods such as pre-cooked dishes, pastries, biscuits, chips, etc. They do not contribute anything (good) to our organism. And our body recognizes them as toxic, since we are not designed to ingest those foods.

3. Massages

Massages will help you to relax your body and release tension of the back and the neck. Often there is a relationship between vision and problems in the neck, back and posture.

4. Move your body

Walk outdoors, do Yoga, Chi Kung, Tai Chi, etc. As you can see, I do yoga. But you can choose any activity that you like, adapt it to your needs and do not forget to synchronize the movement with the breath.

Every morning, a good practice to start the day is to warm the whole body with gentle stretching. Focus on moving the neck gently up / down / left / right and rotations in both directions. Always move at the same time as you inhale or exhale.

5. Do palming

Palming always appears in my blog. I am sure that many of you already know how to do it. The indications for cataracts are to do it for at least 60 minutes a day.

How to do palming?

This involves covering your closed eyes with your palms, lightly cupped over each eye. It is important to be in a comfortable position for this, such as leaning on a cushion on a table as in the photo above. With our hands covering our eyes, we open our eyes to check there is no light visible. If any light is coming in, we adjust our hand position to achieve total darkness.
During palming we become aware of our breathing and the feeling in our eyes so we can visualize the improvement in our vision.  After a while we remove our hands, and little by little we open our eyes and then we look at the world.

6. Look far

Look away for 30 minutes a day. You can split it between 10-10-10 or 20-10 minute intervals. I know it may seem a bit excessive and boring, but this practice relaxes the vision a lot and you can enjoy admiring the beauty of the nature.

7. Look at details

Outside, there is a world to discover. Look at the details of things, nose draw the shapes and colors. Do it in a soft and relaxed way.

How to do shifting?

Shifting can also be called nose drawing. It consists of looking at details and is like drawing the outlines of the things with your gaze. The nose points and directs the movement as if it were a pencil. It doesn't matter if you don't see perfectly, just relax and accept the blur. Enjoy what you see; the colors, shapes and movements. Following this, you can close your eyes and imagine what you have just seen, and then, open them again and check it. You can do this through movement as well, for example by walking. Imagine the distance in your mind while you are walking, and open your eyes to check. Shifting is ideally practiced with no glasses or contacts on. But, in fact, it is the only Bates Method technique that can be practiced with glasses on.

8. Stimulate your periphery

To stimulate your periphery; You can place a rectangle of black cardboard on the bridge of the nose. Then, we block the central vision and the periphery is open. Walk a little, do it in a safe territory for about 5 minutes. Then, remove the piece of cardboard and check if now, your field of vision has expanded. Repeat this process one more time.

You can make variations on this game; Use the trampoline, play with a ball and it is possible with a partner.

9. Look at the opposite movement

You do not need to go by train to see the apparent movement. :)

Remember; Whenever you move your eyes and / or head, there is an apparent movement. You can see it when walking, on the bus, etc.

10. Use the pinhole glasses

The pinhole glasses help to see better, and train the vision. They introduce movement, centralization and relaxation into the vision. And it can be a good resource for cataract problems.

If you have cataracts and want to recover your vision naturally, you have to perform the exercises daily, as if it were a routine. Cheer up! And do not hesitate to ask me any questions.
